My thoughts on the book...
This was the first book i have enjoyed reading in years... I couldn't wait to finish it. It is filled with little mysteries and lots of action. The author makes you feel like you are a deaf traveling with the crew. I really enjoyed the ending. It really showed lots of conflict that was fixed all because of little scrawny Bilbo, and Thorins death really showed how close the dwarfs were and how much their beloved mountain really meant to them. The end showed how much you should fight for what is yours and never let go easily to what you love and i think the book teaches a good virtue in life and it really shows how you should never go down easily.
The Last Stage
Bilbo returns to his beloved hobbit hole after all! Although when he gets there his hobbit hole is being auctioned off because he is presumed dead. But in the end he gets to sit by the fire with a hot tea just like he had been hoping for the whole journey.
"Return Journey"
Bilbo comes back from being unconscious and is carried t thorn to speak to him one last time. Thorn was fatally injured in the battle and Bilbo sees him on his last breaths. After Thorin is buried with the arkenstone and his sword as a hero beside the two other dwarfs kill and fili who have passed beside their king in arms. Thorin also asks Bilbo for forgiveness for being "too blind to see" that he was being a true friend and doing the right thing even though he would receive spite from Thorin. Everyone mourned during thorns death, even the elves... there is a sense going through the air that a true hero has passed which is what happened. One fourteenth of the treasure has been given to bard and the elves just like Thorin has promised and Bilbo also received some treasure, because without bilbo the dwarfs would not have made and thorn would not have been able to see the mountain he has been dreaming of one last time before his death.
"Clouds Burst"
In this chapter Bard approaches Thorin with the arkenstone. And also the battle of five armies occurs in front of the mountain. Thorins anger over the arkenstone takes over his mind and conscious and makes him greedy and selfish. During the duration of the fight bilbo is knocked out because he was hit by a stone which prevents him from making any heroic actions.
"A Thief in the Night"
In this chapter Mr Baggins is truly the burglar. He steals Thorins most prized possession the Arkenstone which is the heart of the mountain. Then late at night he sneaks over the wall using his invisibility ring and goes to talk to the elves. He goes and meets with the elf king and Bard where he gives the stone to the so it can help them with their bargaining.
"The gathering of Clouds"
The mountain now has its king, Thorin Oakensheild Son of Thrain has officially taken over his fathers throne and is now "the king under the mountain. While over this chapter we see the preparations of elves and lake men gather in Dale, which is the burnt town just below The Mountain of Erebor, where the dwarves are. We see spearmen gather and then elves with bows and after a small group of lake men who are poorly armed and led by Bard.
"Fire and Water"
Smug comes down from the mountain and attacks the water city of lake town and puts it to flames, all though the town is armed and ready nothing can pierce through smaugs armor. Smug has a hollow ditch in his armor from a previous battle where he was hit with the black arrow but did not go all the way through. After everyone retreats and runs from smug only one line of defense is left... Bard the archer who possesses the "black arrow". Bard drew back his bow and fired the black arrow just in time for smug to be low enough where he could hit the hollow spot, and he did. Smaug descends from the sky with an arrow pierced in him while spitting fire all the way to his death. The evil fire dragon was no more.
"Not at Home"
As the crew sits outside the door, they hear the roar of smaug come out from the mountain and see him on it, so they run into the door. The dwarves were now trapped inside the dark hall with no food and stuffy air. All hope was lost and death was the only conversation, until Bilbo comes out and gives everyone their hope and will to live back. Now the dwarves are stuck inside their home with their long hated intruder and the thirst for their treasure in closed to being quenched.
"Inside Information"
The crew decides that bilbo is set fit for the job to go and recon the inside of the mountain since he is the "burglar" and he possessed an invisibility ring. So he goes through the long hall that was after the door and has a long gaze. He sees all the treasure that the dwarfs have been striving for this whole journey and can't help but zone out at the sight. Then he sees the giant red dragon asleep and coiled throughout the treasure and automatically shivers with fear, then he goes back to regroup with the crew. while he's back with the dwarfs their joy eventually gets shocked with fear as they hear the roars come from the mountain, and soon smug coms out from hiding... and the dwarfs go through the hall and soon come face to face with their stolen treasure and their long hated enemy .
"On the Door Step"
After two days of paddling through the lake they reach the foot of the mountain and their treasure is almost within reach. Now they set off to find the hidden door into the mountain. On the way they past the town of Dale which was burned and smashed by their foe the fire dragon Smaug who is now living within the dwarves treasure. The dwarves spent days searching for the hidden door and then they find it! However it won't open and then Bilbo remembers something crucial.... "The map came with a key" and then they were into the mountain.
"A Warm Welcome"
In this short chapter the dwarfs and hobbit float down the river after escaping the elves. They eventually reach a lake town and meet with leader of the town. And then they head off to battle smug and win back their homeland.
"Barrels Out of Bond"
The day after the battle with the spiders the dwarfs pick a direction where they think the path might be and after following the direction they seem to be lost again. However they soon find themselves surrounded by red torches and surrounded by elves with bows drawn and spears which overcame the dwarfs daggers and knives so they surrender themselves... Except for Bilbo who slipped on his invisibility ring and stepped to the side. He then again realizes that he has to save his friends. The two guards fell asleep on the job and in went the hobbit to grab the keys. He then grabbed all of his friends. The crew went to the cellar and into the barrels they went and went down the stream.
"Flies and Spiders"
In this chapter we go on a journey through a deep forest. The forest is so thick and deep that no sunlight goes through the tree leaves and no light comes in. The squad finds themselves walking for miles upon miles and they start to dream and become delirious. Then they find themselves in another life threatening close call with giant spiders. Bilbo is the only one who doesn't get tied up in the webs and he realizes once again that he must come to rescue his friends. He decides to throw rocks to knock the spiders down and uses his invisibility ring to dodge them which give the rest time to get down and join him in the fight to escape.
"Queer Lodgings"
The gang officially escapes the dangers of the goblins... But soon encounter much more. While on their walk the hear a series of wolf howls surrounding them. They sprint to the nearest tree line and climb up the trees as the howls get closer and close... that is all except one person, Bilbo. One of the dwarfs who was the lowest scrambles down just in time to get bilbo up just as the wolves start scratching an biting at the trees. Then Gandalf calls to his giant eagle friends and they take the crew away to sanctuary.
"Out of the Frying Pan Into The Fire"
Bilbo manages to escape the caves under the goblins and the Gollum. He then manages to get back with the squad and Gandalf. He uses the invisibility ring to get past the lookout, this assures the squad that he really does have the burglar traits like Gandalf says, he is then praised for his outstanding work and tells the crew his story of escape. After that night they hit the road.
"Riddles in The Dark"
In this chapter Bilbo finds himself in a dark cave made alone away from the rest of the group. In this chapter they leave the elf house and head into the mountains. While they are on the trail they encounter giant thunderstorms thats were so loud and strong they would knock down rocks from the mountains. Then the crew starts to hear loud grunts and voices, which end up to be rock giants tossing a rock to each other as a game just knocking everything down in their path. Two of the dwarfs go on to look for shelter where they find a big cave with enough room for them and the ponies. Later during the night a giant crack opens in the back of the cave and out come goblins to take the dwarfs and the hobbit away (Gandalf escapes) however they ,manage to get away unscathed.

Bilbo is cleaning up from the unexpected party when Gandalf enters the hobbits house. Gandalf reminds Bilbo about a letter on his table that was written from Thorin&Co. which told bilbo to get ready for the adventure and to meet at the inn at 11am which was in ten minutes. Bilbo rushed out of the house forgetting many things including his hat, pocket handkerchief, and money. When he got to the inn the dwarfs and the hobbit rode off on ponies and later met up with Gandalf. After riding in the rain for hours they see a small light and the dwarfs made Bilbo go investigate. He then gets himself caught in a little situation with three giants and him and the dwarfs get captured.
" An Unexpected Party"
In this chapter we learn who our two main characters are going to be, one a hobbit and one is a wizard. Bilbo Baggins is a small hobbit who lives in the house that his father made for his mother where the grass is green and there are many hills and gardens. Bilbo is very respected in his community because he has not gone on any adventures, but soon that changes. Then we meet Gandalf who finds his way at Bilbo's door where he asks Bilbo to go on an adventure. Bilbo then refuses and kicks Gandalf out and invites him to tea the next day. Instead of having tea Bilbo finds himself treating dwarfs and Gandalf to dinner where they recklessly sing, eat, and drink.
