Drill Journal

In the final chapters the book was very tense. J.T., Digger, and Brady were in court for the case of the death of Ben DiAngelo. During this the boys said extremely important and heartfelt things. I thought that the final outcome was very surprising, the boys got lucky. They said that they were very sorry and that they wish they could have gone back in time to stop themselves. Digger also said that he should be punished and not J.T. because he threatened J.T. Also when the judge read the letter from the DiAngelos saying how "Ben was supposed to start nursery school but now there will be an empty cubby where his jacket would go" and "the tricycle we just bought for him is still in the box in the garage" and how Ben will not be able to grow up. The boys received a nine month sentence to a juvenile camp which was very lucky.

Brady learned a life lesson from Ben while babysitting, the conversation was this:
Ben:"Why they doing that, Bwady"...
Brady:"Because he's bad."
Ben: "No Scaw's not bad, he's just being mean."
I think this is a very important thing in life. People should not judge people for the bad decisions in life but for who they are and what they are like on the inside. I know people who can be mean sometimes (or a lot) but I know personally they are good people on the inside and they are not bad people just like "Scaw."

Text to self:
I can relate to Brady's situation because I have had to confess things to my parents with them just like he did.
Text to world:
Manslaughter happens every day and kids go to juvenile detention camps just like in the book.
Text to text:
In the movie Holes the setting took place at a reform cap/juvenile facility where the boys worked and learned to become better people. J.T. and Digger will most likely go to a facility like these for a couple years.

The three relationships I think are at jeopardy are Brady's relationship with J.T., Digger, and his mom. I think his relationship with his mom is at jeopardy because if Brady is convicted his mom will never forgive him, and also herself. His relationship with J.T. and Digger are at jeopardy because they are going to be locked away until they are twenty one because of Brady confessing. Also they will never forgive Brady for telling because they will be locked away for their teenage years.
Journal 17
We learn the troubles that are going on in Diggers family life. This is probably the best reason for his behavior. Digger is always mad, grumpy, and in his own world. His relationship with his dad could also be the problem because his dad is sick and in the hospital. I believe that this situation with the kayak could have been different if his family life was different.
Journal 16
I believe that to be a good person you have to do good things. By doing this you should do the right thing even if it is hard and will not end up good for you. This has happened when I have done the wrong thing and i had to tell my parents that I did it when they asked.

If I were Brady I would keep the drill situation quiet. While on the trip to Rhode Island many things ran through his mind. He thought about all of his memories with JT and Digger. He also thought about switching places with one of the business men on the train and also running away from home.
Journal 14
Chapters 17-22 were very interesting. Brady was going to Rhode Island so he was on the train from Baltimore. While on the train he thinks long and hard on his past memories with his friends. He also decides to throw the drill in the river to hid the evidence. He also saw a picture of his sister for the fist time at his aunts house. He then went home and stayed home for a whole week.

Brady: I found the drill, I know what you did
JT: What are you talking about
Brady: You know exactly what im talking about
JT: No I dont
Brady: cough it up or im reporting you
JT: it was your idea anyway
Brady: But I didn't actually do it
JT: Why don't we just destroy the evidence
Brady:Never
JT: no one will be harmed
Brady: you did way more than just harm
JT: C'mon no one will get in trouble
Brady:NO!

In chapter 13 in the book Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings Brady discovers his fathers missing drill. This makes Brady's mind spin in a million directions. He looks back at the time where he was swimming at the DiAngelo's with JT and Digger. The boys are goofing around and Brady jokingly says we should drill a hole in the kayak. I think Digger took this seriously and drilled the holes in the kayak because he didn't like the DiAngelos because they bought his grandfathers land.
Journal 11
During the story Brady and Mrs DiAngelo talk about building a butterfly garden. They talk about what she will need and what works the best. Brady said that butterflies don't like the color red, they like colors like purple and yellow. Brady's mom puts lavender and some other tall bushes to for them to land in. He also said that she should put some flat rocks and stones on the bottom so they could land and warm up in the sun. He finally recommended that she put a small lily-pad pond or birdbath.
Journal 10
I think JT and Digger did not want to talk to Brady because he was mad. I think they were mad because of what he did for the DiAngelo's. I think they were also jealous and frustrated because of all the good publicity he was getting. This clearly hut Brady's feelings. I think this is unfair because he was just doing the right thing.
Journal 9
Brady talked about how his mother threw everything that was related to his deceased sister. I think his mom did this because she did not want to remember Amanda and become overwhelmed with sadness. This has not happened to anybody I know, but I do know people who have done the opposite. My aunt's house is filled with items from my grandmother. Wether its paintings that she used to own, pictures of her, of kitchen supplies she has it. I think she does this to remember her memories with my grandmother.
Journal 8
In the book Red Kayak Brady was so sad that he got angry. He felt empty and upset. Ive only felt this was once in my life. I felt this way when my grandmother died from her 16 year fight with Alstimers Disease. When Brady looked down and saw the red kayak he felt overwhelmed and scared at the sight. With all of these emotions combined brady felt empty and sadness.

I believe the report on the accident on the Corsica River should have gone like this:
Brady Parks and his friends JT and Digger were at the river bank on a cool April Day. They saw the DiAngelos heading out on their new red Kayak. These three boys knew the water like the back of their hand and knew the water would be rough at the moment, they did not bring it up to the DiAngelo's attention. Later that day Brady Parks gets pulled out of school by his father to hear that they have gone missing. Brady and Mr. Parks joined the search for the DiAngelos. On Brady's 14ft skiff he searched the creeks and coves. He soon finds Ben, the DiAngelo's young son in a little cove hooked onto an old dock. Brady scooped him up and preformed C.P.R. on his way to the ambulance sitting on shore. Due to Brady's quick action he save Ben DiAngelo's life.

In Chapter 5 of the Red Kayak Brady stopped his 14ft skiff in the middle of the Corsica river to pray. This was not a regular thing Brady does, he rarely prays. This made Brady feel happy, safe, and secure. He also thought hard about how fate worked in his favor. If his father was not working in the workshop he would have been out on the water working as a water man and would not have been able to come. If his dad was out on the water he would not have been pulled out of school to help search, if he wasn't there he would not have found Ben because there would not be an extra person to check the creeks.

During the book so far many people could have prevented the situation on the river. Brady, J.T., Digger, and Tilly all saw the DiAngelos heading out on the river, all of the boys know the water like the back of there hand and knew it would be a rough day by the weather. The boys should have warned them before they got out to the bay.
Journal 4
Mr Parks used to go crabbing for a living on the Chesapeake bay. Now he build cabinets because it makes better money for him and his family. Also because Brady crabs and also makes money from that. Another reason is because the crab prices are now lower than they were before so it makes less.
Friendship
To me a good friend is there for you no matter what. A good friend defends you and backs you up. A good friend is someone I can trust and tell anything to. To me some good qualities are that they have to be; trustworthy, nice, caring, outgoing, and a great personality. To me friendship means that you are basically brothers and will do anything for each other no matter what.
